IMG1347While the achievements of the Tasmanian Schools Orienteering Team were a major highlight of the carnival held in Canberra recently, the Oceania Championships also showcased the depth and strength of Tasmania's broader orienteering community. Athletes from Australopers Orienteering Club, Esk Valley Orienteering Club, St Helens Orienteering Club and Tas Foresters featured across junior, through to masters classes, recording championship victories, podium finishes and numerous top-five placings throughout the week.

The three Oceania Championship races each presented competitors with very different challenges.

  • The Middle Distance Championship at Bogong Creek tested competitors in a mix of open forest and intricate technical terrain where accurate navigation was essential.
  • The Long Distance Championship at Stromlo Forest delivered the traditional endurance test of the carnival, with competitors tackling longer courses and complex route choices after racing was delayed by 45 minutes due to thunderstorms and lightning.
  • The championships concluded with the Sprint at the Australian National University, where competitors faced a highly technical campus featuring complex route-choice decisions and little room for navigational error.

Highlights included championship victories to Sue Hancock, Jeff Dunn, Louise Fairfax, Louis Marcant and Sussan Best, while many other Tasmanians achieved podium finishes and top-five results against strong fields from across Australia and New Zealand.
