Southern Local #3 - Waverley Park - April 26

More information and pre-entry available on Eventor

This is the 3rd Southern Local Event for Tasmania in 2026. The event uses the Waverley Park map with courses traversing a network of tracks and runnable forest with excellent views of the Derwent and surrounds. Harder courses include checkpoints in more complex rock and forest terrain to challenge more experienced orienteers.

Four courses are available – Long, Medium, Short, Novice. Come for a wander and explore this special urban park!

The assembly area is at the end of Quarry Road where it forms a corner with Carawa Street, in Mornington, on the Eastern Shore. Quarry Road can be accessed from Cambridge Road. When heading north along Cambridge Road from Eastlands towards Mornington Turn right into Quarry Road; when
traveling south along Cambridge Road from Mornington turn left into Quarry Road.

If arriving by car, please park considerately on adjacent roads and be polite to residents.

North West Local #1 - Tiagarra - April 26

This is the first local event for the Pathfinders Orienteering Club in 2026. The event will be held on the Tiagarra Map in Devonport with the registration, start and finish at the picturesque Bluff Beach area. There will be five courses on offer:- Long, Medium, Short Medium, Short and Novice. Something to suit everyone.

The assembly area is at the bbq shelter on the grass area behind the Devonport Surf Club.

Tas Schools Champs and OST 5 - Currawong Lakes - May 17

This orienteering event is one of the school selection events, being held on a new map produced by Mike Morffew.

Currawong Lakes https://www.currawonglakes.com/ is privately owned land near Lake Leake, with luxury cabin accommodation situated in a beautiful environment. A variety of outdoor activities are offered. The owners approached us to set up orienteering for their clients and we are using the area as a result.

Runnability is generally quite good, due to the semi alpine vegetation. The underlying geology is dolerite; however stony ground is significant on the steepest edges only. The combination of an extensive track network and spur gully terrain will make for some interesting route choices and good orienteering.

The business owners like to maintain a tranquil environment for their guests and are not taking guests other than orienteers for the Sunday. I can highly recommend the place to any orienteers who would like to stay there over the weekend. They may offer discounted rates to orienteers. Minimum 2 nights stay.

Further information will appear in Eventor as course setting details etc are finalised.

Australian Orienteering Championships 2026

The Australian Orienteering Championships held over Easter and the days following Easter were a great success. It's success can be attributed to our fantastic, hard working members of the Tasmanian Orienteering community. Many hours of work go into making a carnival happen. There was a large and hardworking committee that coordinated the carnival. I thank all of those who filled those key roles, attending meetings, working in the field and over the keyboard.

This year our carnival was more complex than usual because the national championships and the Australian Three Days were rolled into one. It was an experiment from an Orienteering Australia perspective and I think that we proved it can be done.

I received many compliments about the carnival, the organisation, the variety of terrains used, the courses and the awards. Many mainland orienteers took the chance to stay on and enjoy a holiday in Tasmania and supported the Hobart Shorts and Tasmanian Championships weekend.

Many people attended the national carnival for the first time. I hope that it was a positive experience for you.

There are many people to thank for bring such a carnival together and in the coming months we will have an opportunity to do that by way of a social function. No matter how big or small your contribution was to the carnival, Orienteering Tasmania is extremely thankful. Please keep your eye out for details.

Many thanks

Christine Brown

Carnival Director
