Stringy Bark Gully, Sunday 8th November
Orienteering at a secret military base!
Well, it once was secret. Next Sundays Southern Local Event #10 will be at Stringy Bark Gully. This was the site of a secret World War II Air Force bomb and munitions store. A previous issue of OKnow told the military story of the site, which recently has had approval for an official name change to "Air Force Gully". Some of the remaining relics at the site are likely to be used as controls. An interactive orienteering map in the OKnow issue identifies many of these relics. (Click here.) Find them! You will need to use a PC or tablet (not a phone) to see these graphics.
Four courses are available – Long and Medium will test the experienced orienteer. Short, and Novice courses are especially suitable for new recruits and junior members. All welcome!
Course setter and controller for this event are Karen Wild-Allen and Simon Allen. Entries close on Wednesday November 4th at midnight. For further details, see Eventor.
Spring Twilight Events 4, south and north, Wednesday 11th November
The fourth spring twilight event in the south will be held on the Montague Bay map. The start is at the Gordons Hill Reserve car park above Rose Bay High School. Organiser for this event is Lindsay Pender. For details, see Eventor.
In the north, the event will be held at St Anthony's Catholic School, Riverside. The event uses the Windsor precinct map but is mainly focused around St Anthony’s. There are three courses available with Course 2 doubling as a walker’s course. Course 1 and 2 will have a map flip. Organiser for this event is Euan Best. For details see Eventor.
Entries for both these events close on Sunday 8th November at midnight.
Registrations are now open for a training course covering event planning and controlling plus course setting. This will be held on Sunday 13th December at the Kingston Community Centre, 35 Redwood Road, Kingston. The course is free and open to everyone, and will satisfy the mandatory update session for level one and two controllers whose accreditation is about to expire and who wish to be re-accredited. For further details and to register, see Eventor.
