The Australian Orienteering Championships carnival kicked off on Saturday 24th September with the Victorian Middle Distance championships. Tasmanian orienteers put in strong performances in the complex goldmining terrain, with great wins by Katie Clauson in W14A, Dion McKenzie in M40A, Sandi Powell in W45AS and Jon McComb in M50.
But it was the Australian Middle Distance championships - held on Sunday in extremely rocky, tricky mining terrain - where Team Tassie really came into its own. Fifteen Tasmanians placed in eleven different classes, with wins to Ella Clauson in W12A, Margot Marcant in W14A, Tara Powell in W18A, Matt Cohen in M40A and Cathy McComb in W50A.
Then, just when we thought things couldn't get any better, on Monday the Australian Schools Championships Sprint produced not one but TWO junior champions - Euan Best and Liana Stubbs (pictured - photos by Mike Calder), who won the Junior Boys and Junior Girls class respectively. Go Team!
We can't wait to see what will happen over the next few days in the Schools long distance and relay races!
