Over 50 participants made it to the Orford Coaching Weekend. Held from Friday 20 to Sunday 22 July, coach Jon McComb and his team put on an action packed weekend crammed with quality technical training.
The aim was to introduce and reinforce orienteering skills in a supportive environment for anyone wanting to improve. This mission was certainly accomplished.
Aged from 8 to nearly 80 - including 15 Schools Team Members - and families and newcomers - participants trained at their own pace with coaches on hand to provide assistance. Every session started with a briefing and there were short and long versions of each exercises to choose from.
The weekend kicked off with a Night O starting on Friday evening at Orford Primary School (mapped through the Sporting Schools Program). On Saturday the day was spent on the "Kelvedon" map south of Swansea. And on Sunday, on the "Curryjong Rivulet" map near Nugent. Sessions included Belly Button Flashlight, Triangle of Truth, Contours of Curiosity, Tunnel Vision and Baffling Gaffling. Essentially - the basics of orienteering were taught and reinforced. Everyone improved and enjoyed a lot of laughs a long the way.
