After three selection races, a Tasmanian Schools Team has been chosen (see below*).
The Team will travel to SA in the October School Holidays to attend the Australian Schools Orienteering Championships and the wider Australian Championships Carnival.
Selectors Judy Davis, Bernard Walker and Donelda Niles were faced with difficult decisions in every age group. Unfortunately numbers are capped by the national rules.
For any juniors who have missed out we encourage parents to consider travelling independently to the Carnival and/or consider the Invitaional Team Camp possibility (see the article at page 12 in the June edition of The Australian Orienteer).
Parents and siblings can attend (independently) and enter every event as well. There are classes to suit all ages, skill and fitness levels. At the Schools Events there are associated public races.
The Team travel and stay together along with the other state teams, the New Zealand Team and the said Invitational Team. They compete in seven events – the Australian Schools Sprint, Long and Relay Championships and the wider Australian Sprint, Middle, Long and Relay Championships. The first weekend of racing is near Renmark and then the Carnival moves to the Adelaide Hills.
Volunteers step into the roles of Team supervisors. Meisha Austin is the Manager. Jon McComb and Christoph Prunche (Hobart's latest coach-in-residence from October and over the Summer) are coaches.
Reserves are a part of the Team and can race officially in the wider Australian Championship Events. But while reserves get to participate in every Schools Event they do not do so as official competitors (because of the governing rules team numbers are capped and must be named now). Being a reserve is an honour and a great opportunity to experience a national championship. If prior to the trip an official competitor drops out, a reserve may be elevated to replacing them. Non-travelling reserves are not a part of the Team but may be invited to join the Team if a team member pulls out for any reason.
