Join our “Learn to Orienteer” program, it’s for anyone who wants to learn to orienteer – all ages are welcome.

Learn to Orienteer is Orienteering Australia’s beginner participation program, developed to teach the fundamental skills to those wanting to learn how to orienteer. You will be guided through a sequence of activities to develop your skills and confidence to enjoy our orienteering events.

 

 1. South (Hobart-based)

Coaching Sessions to run before these local events: (9:00am – 10:30am) bookings now open

    • Sunday July 6 (Waverley Park)

    • Sunday August 3 (Geilston Gully)

    • Sunday September 7 (Tolosa Park)

The three sessions immediately precede each event. The cost includes all three tuition sessions and entry to all events. At each session we will give you the skills to enable you to successfully complete and enjoy the following event – and future bush events. These include:

    • Using a compass to navigate

    • Interpreting the map symbols

    • Reading contours

    • Basic strategies

You do not need any special gear, we will lend you compasses and timing chips.

 

Fee for the 3-week program (including the events)

(students must be accompanied by an adult, who must also participate)

Skills Session

    • St Helens bushland. This session immediately precedes an event. You will learn essential orienteering skills such as navigating with a compass, interpreting map symbols and basic strategies, which you will then put to use in the event.

3. South (Hobart-based)

Learn to Orienteer Program: Sunday Mornings Oct 12, 19, 26 (2025)

This program runs in the three weeks leading up to our Twilight Series, which is a 6-week series designed for specifically for beginners. It is held in parks and reserves around Hobart and will give you the skills to enable you to enjoy the events.

Locations and Activities: Three different locations suited to the activities

  • Week 1: Wentworth Park

    • Legend (map symbols) relay game

    • Orientating map to Ground Features - Map Walk

    • Star Relay and mini-courses

  • Week 2: Queen's Domain

    • Compass points game

    • Orientating map with compass

    • Handrails and Attack Points

    • Counting steps

    • Mini-courses

  • Week 3: Knocklofty

    • Contours

    • Collecting and catching features

    • Simplification

    • Traffic lights

    • Relocation

    • Line courses

5. North (Launceston-based)

Development Program: Sunday Mornings Nov 30, Dec 7 (2025), Jan 4, 18, Feb 1, 15, Mar 1, 15, 22 (2026)

A nine-week program designed to improve your orienteering skills, with a primary focus on bush navigation. The final session will be a week and a half before the 2026 Australian Orienteering Championships, held in Tasmania, where we hope to see you compete with confidence using your new skills! Open to all beginner and intermediate orienteers. 

Fee for the 9-week program (including the events)
