Technical Training Session this Saturday 22 September
Join the 'Controlled Chaos' at Curryjong Creek, near Nugent - Starting at 3pm sharp. Finished by 4:30pm
Practise your Aus Champs carnival techniques on very short, sharp courses through spectator controls, out of mass starts, around butterfly loops and all in mixed plantation forest. There'll be crowds cheering, bells ringing, the commentator calling your name. By day's end you'll be confident you can handle anything the Adelaide Hills can throw at you.
RSVP to Jon McComb by Wednesday night. We need a minimum of 20 people. If you want to go, make sure you cajole a friend into coming along too. It'll be heaps good fun :)
The Orienteering Tasmania Annual Awards Night recognised outstanding voluntary contributions as well as sporting achievements, particularly in the open age class.
Cathy and Jon McComb (pictured) not only organised everything to do with the Night, they and their children Zali and Jett, managed to take home a swag of awards, medallions and certificates between them.
Their successes were warmly received by all. Both Jon and Cathy have done an enormous amount of voluntary work over the years - often behind the scenes involving timing, course planning and many other technical tasks. Cathy is also often sought after for her wise and professional advice on all things orienteering.
This year also, in his new dual roles as State Coaching Coordinator and Schools Team Coach, Jon has played a huge part in helping the rest of us improve our skills. Jon has organised many Technical Training Sessions as well as the Orford Training Weekend and the Junior Camp. He also supported Mark Purkis, our British Coach in Residence, deliver coaching in Hobart over our long summer.
In recognition of Jon's motivating efforts and corresponding incredible fitness (setting up exercises, joining in and retrieving tapes on top of his own endurance running program) Jon was named both Coach of the Year and winner of the Vice President's Award.
Tassie's Top 5 Most Excellent Orienteers & OST Winners
At the Annual Awards Night the top 5 finishers in the John Brammall Perpetual Trophy for Individual Excellence were announced. John's wife Val Brammall presented their awards. Zali McComb was announced the most excellent. Close behind her were Mikayla Cooper, Chris Brown, Niko Stoner and Riley Kerr.
Winners in each competition class in the Orienteering Series Tasmania (OST) Competition were also announced. Too many to name! But all well deserved in a competition which reflects commitment, persistence, performance and volunteering as an event organiser.
Watch Livelox to see the maps for all courses and route choices of those who uploaded their routes from Saturday's Long Distance Championships held on the Transit Flat map, near St Helens. You can view any course in Livelox by clicking on 'Replay' even if no-one has uploaded their route.
Organiser Bernard Walker devised an excellent handicapping system for the Relay Championships. Participants simply entered in their preferred distance - Long, Middle or Short. Then Bernard looked at kilometre rates over the season to create relatively even teams in all three categories. This resulted in wildly changing overall places as the competition unfolded and in the end, close and totally unexpected results! Pictured are the Medium Course Winners - Zali McComb, Sussan Best and Janet Bush. Here are the Full Results Photos from the event are available below. Click the thumbnail for a full sized image.
