Gorringes Beach - Southern Local #8 - Sunday 12 October

This is the eighth Southern Local event. The beautiful Gorringe’s Beach is on the edge of the Mortimer Bay Coastal Reserve in Sandford. Birdlife and wildlife is abundant in this peaceful reserve. The terrain is completely flat. Tricky navigation in coastal dunes and lagoons is interspersed with some fast track running.

More information and pre-entry on Eventor

Five courses are available – Long, Medium, Shortened Medium, Short, Novice.

The Short and Novice courses will stick to tracks. Long and Medium course runners are likely to get wet feet.

NOTE: the Long course has 22 controls, which is too many for a P-card. If you wish to do the Long and do not have an SI-stick you can borrow one on the day.

Where is the Assembly Area?

The assembly area is on Paroa Ct, off Gellibrand Dr, Sandford. Google link https://maps.app.goo.gl/TxW4hZ8eenvkjAt89 or coordinates -42.97547, 147.48072 Parking is tight. Please carpool if possible, or right angle park on the south side Paroa Ct.

Launceston City Race - Sunday 19 October

Race through the scenic Seaport to the Launceston City Centre and into the surrounding suburbs, visiting some of the city centre’s iconic landmarks.

Using a full colour, detailed map, you’ll navigate between controls, in order, to complete your course in the quickest time. But it’s not about speed. Good planning and smart route choices will save time, so be prepared for some thinking!

Australian Orienteer Quarterly Magazine

Hard copies of the latest edition of Australian Orienteer have now been distributed to all those financial members who requested a copy. If you are a financial member of a club you are eligible to receive a free copy. It costs $5 per copy to post issues out which is why I distribute most by hand at events.

If you have received a posted copy and no longer wish to receive it please amend your status in Eventor under “MY PAGES” / “INFORMATION”. On the other hand if you do wish to receive a copy each quarter and have not been getting one, log in to Eventor as above and tick the “Australian Orienteer” box. If you missed out on the last edition and would like a copy I have a few spares left. Just email me at membership@tasorienteering.asn.au

Stagger On 24 Hr Tasmanian Rogaining Championships

Save these dates for a weekend of rogaining enjoyment featuring the 24-Hour Tasmanian Rogaining Championships. There will also be a non-championship 6-hour event.

Friday, 5th December (afternoon) - Hash House open for camping
Saturday, 6th December - 24-Hour starts and 6-hour event held
Sunday, 7th December - 24-hour event finishes

The event will be held west of Oatlands and has been named after a significant feature on the map - Stags Head. The rogaine area includes a well regarded orienteering map (Stags Head!) so if you have enjoyed orienteering there in the past come along for a longer version!

For those whom have not been there before, the terrain features pleasant grazed bushland on private farms and will provide plenty of challenges for both novice and experienced rogainers. And yes, newcomers are welcome at this event!

If you have any queries about the weekend please contact Bernard Walker - bernard.walker@rt.asn.au

Entries will open in early October on the Rogaining Tasmania website.
