Feeling you have been missing out on your weekly dose of Orienteering over summer? Well, the southern season starts off on Saturday 15 Feb with a local event at 7 Mile Beach.
Ideally pre-register but there will be spare maps for anyone who turns up on the day. But remember, this event is on SATURDAY 15 February, not the usual Sunday for events. Four courses, beginners welcome.
More information and pre-entry is available on Eventor
The event will be based on the area around the airport runway's southeastern end, not used very often and recently remapped by Mark Hey. While there are long and medium distance courses for experienced Orienteers we have designed beginner and short courses suitable for first timers. So this will be a wonderful way to start a new Orienteering year on an interesting and not often used map – the forest and sand dunes of Seven Mile Beach to the west of the end of the airport runway.
Newcomers are advised that there will be volunteers on hand to explain the map and help you on your way and also a reminder that all first timers are exempt the usual run fee – ie it’s a free event for you. And if it is a sunny day, bring your bathers and have a swim after your run.
Following this event Australopers Orienteering Club will hold a very brief AGM. Members are invited to bring along some lunch and perhaps a bottle of something to tide you over until the AGM at approximately 1:30 pm.
Where is the Assembly Area?
The assembly area is on a short side road at the junction of Surf Road and Grueber Ave. Easiest way to get there from Hobart is to drive towards the airport, turn off on Holyman Drive towards the airport but keep going, following signs to Seven Mile beach along Grueber Ave until you see Orienteering signs at the Surf Rd junction. You can also get there by driving along Surf Road from the Seven Mile Beach shop. The assembly area is less than 100 m from the beach.
